Brief of incident / Award Citation:

On the intervening nigh of 28th and 29th July, 2001, Constable Mridul Gogoi of Platoon No.11 of 3rd APTF Bn. was on rear guard sentry duty at Ananda Bazar Police Out Post of Barpeta District. During his duty period at night at about 01.25 A.M. Shri Gogoi heard a sound of breaking of the rear boundary fencing of the Out Post. Immediately Shri Gogoi focused the dragon light in his hand towards the fencing where from the sound came. Within a second after the focusing of the light a volley of bullets came from the fencing side and hit the dragon light and damaged it. However, Shri Gogoi did not loose his composure and fired towards militants. Hearing the firing between the militants and the Constable other personnel of the platoon woke up and immediately took position with their weapons and opened firing towards the militants. The exchange of firing continued for about 15 minutes. Having no alternative the militants had to retreat and finally taking advantage of darkness they left the place. In the incident, Shri Gogoi showed exemplary courage and his prompt counter firing made the militant repulse thereby saving lives of other platoon personnel as well as arms and ammunition from being taken away by the militants.
