Brief of incident / Award Citation:

On 22-06-2005, based on a secret information from a very reliable source that the members of banned ULFA Organization are camping at Pobha Reserved forest under Jonai P.S to collect the demanded ransom money from the source, Shri Mridulananda Sarma, APS, Supdt. of Police, Dhemaji directed ShriSwapnaneel Deka, APS, Addl. S.P.(HQ), Dhemaji to chalk out a plan to nab the extremists. Two teams were formed for conducting the said operation. One team was led by the Addl. S.P(HQr), Shri Swapnaneel Deka, with S.I. Rohit Dutta, Officer-in-Charge, Jonai P.S., Hav. Khagen Borgohain, Armed Constable Dharmendra Sonowal, ABC/ Sarat Gogi, ABC/ Kuladhar Borah and ABC/Manoj Hazarika along with the source went in a Maruti Van belonging to the sorce in Camouflage risking their lives to the place where extremist were hiding. Another team led by Inspector Sidheswar Gogoi, C.I. Jonai with 5 Comando Bn personnel were put in the route to Leku Jhelam as stop party so that in case of any emergency they can be used as re-enforcement. On arrival of the main striking party at Leku Jhelam Village at 4.15 P.M. the source was asked to get down from the vehicle to lure the extremist as per plan. Seeing the source, the extremists came near the vehicle to collect the ransom money from the surce. Immediately, the police party came out of the vehicle and challenged the extremist. Surprised the extremists started running towards the jungle by lobbing a hand grenade with a view to kill Addl. S.P. and his party but the grenade did not explode. The extremists also fired four rounds from .32 revolver towards the police party. The effective command of Addl. S.P. Shri Deka encouraged the police party and they retaliated effectively.
